Hot Weather: Does it Cause Foundation Cracks?

Hot weather is par for the course here in Texas. Not only does it pose problems for people and pets, it poses problems for house foundations too. In fact, extremely hot weather and humidity can cause cracks in your foundation, leading to the need for foundation repair. But you can prevent cracking and deterioration by having regular foundation inspections by a professional.

How Does Hot Weather Causes Foundation Cracks?

Hot weather makes the soil around the foundation contract. In summer, the ground around your foundation is extremely dry, especially in the Houston area where scorching temps can reach up to 105 degrees. Climate changes are the real culprit here. As the heat rises, the clay soil around the foundation starts to shrink and contract from the house, causing movement. Fractures can easily go from 1/8” to ¼” in size very quickly, growing to more than an inch in width. Gaps cause weaknesses in concrete over the years, leading to sinking and settling of the foundation. You may find that your foundation is starting to slope and that it’s not level anymore.

Preventive Measures

Fortunately, there are some preventive measures you can take.
  • Maintain a consistent moisture level around the foundation with a soaker hose to minimize cracks. Use low pressure and do this up to three times a day.
  • Waterproof your yard and basement, as proper drainage around your foundation prevents water build up that can lead to pressure and cracking. Allowing water to pool around the foundation can lead to consistently wet soil, which can then lead to cracked foundation walls.
  • Be aware of crack-prone areas of your foundation and monitor their size so you can get help if they get bigger. Take note in a notebook or keep track on your phone.
  • Monitor moisture with landscaping and plants. Placing shrubs and grasses around the foundation not only makes your home look nice, it can help you monitor and protect the foundation. Be on the lookout for dry or yellow grass, or drooping plants right against the foundation.
  • Be diligent in colder weather too, as it’s not just heat that can cause problems with your concrete slab. Cold weather and rainfall can lead to cracks as well, because slabs will expand and splinter when cool or wet.

Get Inspections to Prevent Foundation Cracks

You’re better off preventing these issues before they have a chance to start. If you see signs of a deteriorating foundation, call a Houston foundation repair contractor to conduct an inspection. In fact, it’s a good idea to schedule them regularly, at least once a year. Being proactive is the best course of action to stop cracks and other damage in their tracks.
